ISBN Systems in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, ISBNs are administered by the Nielsen ISBN Agency (nielsenisbnstore.com). UK ISBNs share the 978-0 and 978-1 prefix groups with the US and other English-language countries. Individual ISBNs cost £89, blocks of 10 cost £164, and 100 ISBNs cost £369. This makes the UK system significantly more affordable per ISBN than the US Bowker system, especially in larger quantities.

Nielsen BookData is the UK's primary bibliographic metadata service and the backbone of the British book supply chain. When you register your ISBN with Nielsen, your book's metadata flows to Gardners, Bertrams, and other UK wholesalers, as well as to library systems and online retailers. Submitting complete, accurate metadata to Nielsen at the point of ISBN registration is one of the most important steps in UK book distribution.

The UK has a legal deposit requirement under the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003. Within one month of publication, you must send one copy of your book to the British Library. Five additional legal deposit libraries — the Bodleian Library (Oxford), Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Wales, and Trinity College Dublin — can request copies within 12 months of publication. Your ISBN is the primary identifier used in this process.

The British Library maintains the UK's national bibliography and its catalogue is searchable at bl.uk. Use the lookup tool above to check if your book appears in bibliographic databases, then cross-reference with the British Library's Explore catalogue. Discrepancies between your registered metadata and what appears in library systems can cause ordering issues and should be corrected through Nielsen.

For UK authors using Amazon KDP's free ISBN option, be aware that the ISBN will be registered under Amazon's imprint (Independently Published), not your own. If you plan to distribute through UK bookshops, libraries, or wholesalers, investing in your own Nielsen ISBN gives you full control over your publisher identity. Many UK independent bookshops and library acquisition teams filter out books without a recognised publisher imprint.
