The thumbnail test

Real cover · retail size

Most covers only get judged at this size.

Amazon shoppers see your cover as a thumbnail first. We stress-test every concept there — contrast, focal point, and title legibility — before it's ever shown full size.

What cover design clients say

Authors describe covers that captured their vision, fit their market, and gave their books a professional first impression.

Went above and beyond and the final cover absolutely exceeded my expectations!
Cover of Walt & His Park: The Stories You (Probably) Haven't HeardPhil GramlichAuthor of Walt & His Park: The Stories You (Probably) Haven't Heard
The team was dedicated to getting the final project right, providing as many revisions as needed. They were consistently responsive to my questions, requests and concerns.
Cover of A Journey of Sunsets: An Adventurous Story of Beauty, Transformation & DiscoveryNashyelli Elena HernandezAuthor of A Journey of Sunsets: An Adventurous Story of Beauty, Transformation & Discovery
This was an excellent experience for publishing my first book. The team was very patient and cooperative throughout the entire process, keeping each step very clear and their words very kind. I would love to work with HMD Publishing again in the future!
Cover of Wrinkles, Rewritten: A Skin-Deep Guide to Aging GracefullyAshlyn VaughnAuthor of Wrinkles, Rewritten: A Skin-Deep Guide to Aging Gracefully
HMD Publishing delivered an excellent product result in book design, and I plan to rehire.
Cover of When Dad Falls Short: Finding Healing in God’s Perfect FatherhoodClay HessAuthor of When Dad Falls Short: Finding Healing in God’s Perfect Fatherhood
More like a 4.9! It was easy to work with the team and the cover design was absolutely fantastic! I offered inspiration and they made magic! My only complaint is the back cover design. I wanted a mix of synopsis and author bio but deferred to their expertise, even though I provided examples of what I wanted they offered their professional opinion. The delivery was a few hours past the agreed time but in the end all worked out and I am pleased with the experience and the delivered product. And I definitely feel like it was well worth the price!
Cover of The Other Side of Leadership: Reclaiming Power and Purpose on Your Leadership JourneyDr. Brandiss PearsonAuthor of The Other Side of Leadership: Reclaiming Power and Purpose on Your Leadership Journey
HMD Publishing was exceptional. I would definitely work with them again as they were outstanding and delivered exceptional content for my manuscript. Thank you!
Cover of Cast Thy Nets: The Power of Love & DiscipleshipEric StengelAuthor of Cast Thy Nets: The Power of Love & Discipleship
They exceeded our expectations. We will use them again for future books and formatting.
Cover of Single Man Walking Through Divorce: Healing, Faith, and Strength for the Journey Through and After DivorceGeorge LamelzaAuthor of Single Man Walking Through Divorce: Healing, Faith, and Strength for the Journey Through and After Divorce
I’ve used them for several projects and they are very responsive and very collaborative. They made sure that I am completely happy. I am doing another project with them as well.
Cover of The True You 2.0 Field Journal: An Accompaniment to Be The You That’s More You Than You’ve Ever BeenK CrabtreeAuthor of The True You 2.0 Field Journal: An Accompaniment to Be The You That’s More You Than You’ve Ever Been
HMD Publishing delivered what we asked for and we are happy with the end results. But there was some unnecessary anxiety in the process due to our design brief not being initially followed, requiring follow up emails. Overall a good experience.
Cover of Helping Kids Rise and Shine: A Tapping Guidebook for Stress, Anxiety, and BullyingPaul BoultonAuthor of Helping Kids Rise and Shine: A Tapping Guidebook for Stress, Anxiety, and Bullying
I am beyond pleased! I selected this gig because of all of the positive reviews, and I'm delighted to say that they were all absolutely correct. the HMD Publishing Team at HMD Publishing were quick and responsive, they understood my needs, and paid close attention to my concerns, always doing their best to improve for the next round of edits. The job was done in less than the anticipated time, too, which was a wonderful unexpected bonus! That can only happen when working with a team that listens and actually cares. Thank you so much, HMD Publishing! I'll definitely be back for my next one!!

FAQ

Questions authors usually ask before they commit.

Clear answers on timeline, scope, rights, revisions, and what happens after checkout.

Do I need a quote, or can I just order a cover?

You can order straight away: the three packages are fixed prices with VAT included, and checkout takes a couple of minutes. A quote is for authors who are not sure which package fits — a series, a hardback jacket, or a book that does not sit neatly in one genre. In business hours a designer replies within the hour with your price. Their concept direction — the genre signals they'd use, the typography approach, and how the cover would read at thumbnail size — follows within 48 hours. Business hours are Mon–Fri, 9am–6pm UK. Outside those hours, first thing the next working day. There are no payment details to enter and no obligation to book.

Do I see a design before I pay?

No. The concept direction is a written plan, not artwork. Design work starts once you book, and the package you choose sets how many concepts you see: 1 with eBook Essential, 2 with Print Ready, and 3 with Launch Bundle, each with 2 to 4 revision rounds. You can ask for the direction to be adjusted before you book, and that costs nothing.

What happens after I accept the quote?

We invoice you and your designer starts on the concepts included in your package. Once you approve a direction and your revision rounds are done, we finish the cover as production-ready files: the full wrap with spine and back cover, blurb layout and barcode placement, sizing to your exact trim and page count, a print-ready PDF for KDP and IngramSpark, an ebook JPEG, and source files. Trim size, page count, and blurb are collected at that point, not before.

How much do professional book cover design services cost?

Professional book cover design services start at £197. Prices are fixed by package rather than quoted by the hour, so you know the cost before you commit — and if you are not sure which package fits, you can ask a designer to price your specific book, free, and hear back within the hour in business hours.

What is included in custom book cover design?

Every custom book cover design includes genre research, a retail-thumbnail check, high-resolution final files, and a 3D mockup. Packages include 1–3 initial concepts and 2–4 revision rounds, with the exact allowance shown before you order.

Can a professional book cover designer prepare ebook and print files?

Yes. eBook Essential includes an ebook front cover. Print Ready and Launch Bundle add a paperback full wrap with spine and back cover; a hardcover jacket can be quoted once the printer template and final page count are available.

Do you design covers matched to my genre?

Yes. We review current covers in your category, then develop the typography, colour, composition, and thumbnail hierarchy around the signals readers expect in that genre. You can include reference titles and series requirements in the brief.

Who owns the finished cover and source files?

You receive commercial-use rights for the delivered cover artwork, subject to the licence terms of any third-party fonts or stock assets used. Editable source files are supplied where they are included in the selected package or agreed quote.

How long does book cover design take?

If you order a package, your designer starts straight away. If you ask for a quote, your price comes back within the hour in business hours and the concept direction within 48 hours. Once you accept, the finished cover normally takes 7-14 days, depending on the selected package and how quickly revision feedback is returned. The package you choose sets the deliverables, the revision allowance, and the schedule.
