Book Cover Dimensions Guide
A complete guide to standard book sizes for KDP, IngramSpark, and other platforms.
Choosing the right trim size for your book is a crucial decision that affects printing costs, distribution options, and reader perception. This guide breaks down the standard sizes for different genres and platforms.
1Standard Trim Sizes by Genre
While you can technically print a book at any size, sticking to industry standards ensures your book fits on bookstore shelves.
Fiction (Trade Paperback)
5" x 8" or 5.25" x 8" or 5.5" x 8.5" (Most common for novels)
Non-Fiction / Business
6" x 9" (The industry standard for trade non-fiction)
Mass Market Paperback
4.25" x 6.87" (Usually reserved for traditionally published pocket books)
Textbooks / Workbooks
8.5" x 11" (Standard letter size)
2Ebook Cover Dimensions
Ebooks don't have "inches," they have pixels. Platforms have specific requirements to ensure high quality on all screens.
💡 Pro Tips
- Amazon KDP Recommended: 1600 x 2560 pixels
- Aspect Ratio: 1.6:1
- Resolution: 72 DPI is standard for screens, but we design at 300 DPI for future-proofing
- Color Profile: RGB (Red, Green, Blue) for screens
3Print Cover Requirements
Print covers are more complex because they include the back cover and the spine.
⚠️ Important
- Spine width is calculated based on your exact page count and paper type
- You must include "bleed" (usually 0.125") around all edges
- Keep text and important elements at least 0.25" away from the trim edge (Safety Zone)
- Color Profile: CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) for printing
If you are unsure, 6" x 9" is the safest bet for non-fiction, and 5.5" x 8.5" is the standard for fiction. We can always adjust the design if you change your mind before the final export.
