Understanding Book Elements and Structure
Learn about the different parts of a book - front matter, body, and back matter - and what to include in your manuscript.
Every professionally published book follows a standard structure with three main sections: front matter, body, and back matter. Understanding these elements helps you prepare a complete manuscript and make informed decisions during the formatting process.
1The Three Main Sections
Books are divided into three primary sections, each serving a specific purpose.
Front Matter
Everything that comes before your main content (title page, copyright, dedication, etc.)
Body
Your main content - chapters, parts, or sections
Back Matter
Everything after your main content (about author, acknowledgments, etc.)
2Front Matter Elements
Front matter appears before Chapter 1 and sets up your book. Here's what can be included:
Half Title Page (Optional)
A page with just your book title - common in traditionally published books
Title Page (Required)
Full title, subtitle (if any), author name, and publisher
Copyright Page (Required)
Copyright notice, ISBN, publisher info, edition, disclaimers
Dedication (Optional)
Short dedication to someone special - usually just a few lines
Epigraph (Optional)
A relevant quote that sets the tone for your book
Table of Contents (Recommended)
List of chapters with page numbers - we create this for you
Foreword (Optional)
Written by someone else about your book - adds credibility
Preface (Optional)
Written by you about why you wrote the book
Acknowledgments (Optional - can also go in back matter)
Thank people who helped with your book
Introduction/Prologue (Optional)
Sets up the story or topic - part of the narrative
💡 Pro Tips
- Not every book needs all front matter elements
- Fiction typically has less front matter than non-fiction
- Title page and copyright page are essential
- Table of contents is highly recommended for non-fiction
- Keep dedication short and sweet
3Body Elements
The body is your main content - the heart of your book.
💡 Pro Tips
- Chapters - Most common organization method
- Parts - Larger divisions containing multiple chapters
- Sections - Alternative to chapters for some non-fiction
- Chapter Titles - Optional but recommended
- Chapter Numbers - Can be numbers, words, or both
- Epigraphs - Quotes at the start of chapters
- Scene Breaks - Visual breaks within chapters (usually *** or ###)
- Subheadings - Common in non-fiction for organization
4Back Matter Elements
Back matter comes after your final chapter and provides additional value to readers.
Epilogue (Optional)
Wraps up the story after the main conclusion - common in fiction
Afterword (Optional)
Author's final thoughts or context - common in non-fiction
Acknowledgments (Recommended)
Thank people who helped - if not in front matter
About the Author (Highly Recommended)
Your bio - helps readers connect with you
Also by This Author (Recommended if applicable)
List your other books - great for series or multiple titles
Appendices (Optional)
Additional reference material, charts, resources
Glossary (Optional)
Definitions of specialized terms
Bibliography/References (Optional)
Sources cited in non-fiction books
Index (Optional)
Alphabetical listing of topics with page numbers - advanced non-fiction
Discussion Questions (Optional)
Great for book clubs - especially fiction
💡 Pro Tips
- About the Author is one of the most important back matter elements
- Include links to your website and social media

- Body: Arabic numerals starting at 1 (1, 2, 3, 4)
- Back matter: Continues body numbering
- Some elements don't show page numbers (title page, copyright)
