Is KDP Select Worth It? KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited Explained

Is KDP Select worth it? It depends on one thing more than any other: where your readers buy ebooks. KDP Select is Amazon's free 90-day programme that puts your Kindle ebook into Kindle Unlimited and unlocks a few promotion tools. The price is exclusivity. While enrolled, your ebook can't be sold anywhere else, not on Apple Books, Kobo or even your own website. For a debut novel in a genre that Kindle Unlimited readers devour, that trade often makes sense. For a non-fiction book with readers across many stores, it often doesn't. This guide explains how KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited actually work, using Amazon's own rules, so you can make the call for your book rather than following someone else's.

Key takeaways#

  • KDP Select is free, covers your Kindle ebook only, and runs in 90-day terms. Your paperback, hardback and audiobook can still be sold anywhere.
  • Enrolling puts your ebook into Kindle Unlimited, where you're paid for pages read from a shared monthly fund, not a fixed price per book.
  • Each term you can run either up to five free days or one Kindle Countdown Deal, never both.
  • Exclusivity is the real cost: no Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play or direct ebook sales while you're enrolled.
  • Select tends to suit series fiction in genres popular with subscribers. Going wide tends to suit non-fiction, niche and international audiences.

What is KDP Select?#

KDP Select is an optional programme inside Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). It costs nothing to join and applies only to the Kindle ebook edition of your book. When you enrol, you agree to make that ebook available exclusively through KDP for a 90-day term. In return, Amazon gives you:

  • Automatic inclusion in Kindle Unlimited (KU), Amazon's reading subscription.
  • Promotion tools: Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals.
  • A higher royalty in four markets: 70% on sales in Brazil, Japan, India and Mexico, provided your list price meets the 70% requirements.

Your book stays on sale in the Kindle Store at its normal price throughout. Readers who don't subscribe to Kindle Unlimited can still buy it, and you still earn your usual 35% or 70% royalty on those sales.

When a term ends, it renews for another 90 days unless you switch renewal off. Plenty of authors forget this, which is how a "let's try it for three months" decision quietly becomes a year.

How Kindle Unlimited pays authors#

This is the part most authors find confusing, so here it is plainly.

Kindle Unlimited readers pay Amazon a monthly subscription and can read as many enrolled books as they like. They don't buy your book, so you don't earn a sale. Instead, Amazon sets aside a pot of money each month, called the KDP Select Global Fund, and shares it among enrolled authors according to how many pages subscribers read.

Pages are counted using the Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). Amazon calculates this with standard font and layout settings so that a page means the same thing on every device. A few rules matter:

  • You're paid only for pages a customer reads for the first time. Rereads don't count again.
  • Each customer can generate up to 3,000 normalised pages per title.
  • Counting usually starts at chapter 1, where Amazon sets the start reading location, so your front matter doesn't count.
  • The fund size and the rate per page change every month. Amazon announces the fund in its KDP community forum, and your reports show what you actually earned.

That last point is why we won't give you a "KU pays X per page" figure here. It moves, and any figure you read online is a past month's number, not a promise about yours. If you want to model scenarios, our free royalty calculator includes a Kindle Unlimited estimator where you can plug in your own assumptions.

One more rule worth knowing: Amazon doesn't allow you to reward Kindle Unlimited readers for reading, with money, gifts, contest entries or bonus content. Its systems monitor for this, so keep your promotion clean.

Free Book Promotions and Kindle Countdown Deals#

Every 90-day term gives you one promotion type to use. You choose which.

A few conditions trip authors up:

  • Countdown Deals have a price window. On Amazon.co.uk your normal list price must sit between £1.99 and £15.99, including VAT. On Amazon.com it's $2.99 to $24.99.
  • Countdown Deals need time. The book must have been enrolled for at least 30 days, and the list price must stay unchanged for 30 days before and 14 days after the deal.
  • Unused days vanish. Free days and Countdown Deals don't roll over into the next term.
  • Plan ahead. A free promotion has to be scheduled at least a day before it starts, and a Countdown Deal at least 24 hours ahead.

The exclusivity rule: what you can and can't do#

Exclusivity is the whole trade, so read it carefully. While your ebook is enrolled:

  • You can't sell or give away the ebook digitally anywhere else. That includes Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Barnes & Noble, Draft2Digital and your own website, blog or email list.
  • You can sell your paperback and hardback anywhere, including through IngramSpark to bookshops.
  • You can sell your audiobook anywhere.
  • You can change your description, price and royalty option without affecting enrolment.

You also need exclusive rights to the main content. Public domain books aren't eligible.

Two practical warnings. First, if you've ever uploaded the ebook to another store, make sure it's fully removed before you enrol, because a lingering listing can break exclusivity. Second, a "free ebook for newsletter subscribers" offer counts as digital distribution. If you use a reader magnet, make it a separate short story or bonus, not the enrolled book.

If you change your mind, you can cancel within three days of a term starting. After that, you'd need to contact KDP, so the safer route is to switch off renewal well before the term ends.

KDP Select vs going wide#

"Going wide" means publishing your ebook on several stores at once: Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play and others. Neither route is better in general. They suit different books.

The honest truth is that wide takes patience. Sales on other stores usually build slowly, so a wide launch that looks quiet in month one tells you little. KDP Select can feel faster because Kindle Unlimited readers are already browsing for their next free-to-them read.

If you're weighing up platforms more broadly, our guide on how to self-publish a book in the UK walks through every step, and publishing on Apple Books shows what one wide store involves.

So, is KDP Select worth it for your book?#

Ask yourself these five questions.

  1. 1Do your readers use Kindle Unlimited? Browse the top 100 in your Kindle category. If many bestsellers show "Read for free with Kindle Unlimited", subscribers are a big part of your genre's audience.
  2. 2Is it a series? Kindle Unlimited readers who finish book 1 often borrow book 2 straight away. Series fiction tends to benefit most. A standalone gets fewer of those follow-on reads.
  3. 3Is it long and readable? Because you're paid per page read, a book people finish earns more than one they abandon. A strong opening matters even more in KU.
  4. 4How international is your audience? Kobo and Apple Books matter more in some countries than others. If you already know readers outside Amazon want your book, exclusivity costs you more.
  5. 5Do you sell direct? If you sell ebooks from your own site or plan to, KDP Select rules that out for the enrolled title.

A sensible approach for many debut authors is to treat KDP Select as a 90-day experiment. Enrol at launch, use one promotion, watch your page reads in your KDP reports, and decide at the end of the term whether to renew or go wide. Just set a reminder before the renewal date.

Whichever route you take, the basics still decide your results: a cover that fits the genre, a description that sells, clean formatting and the right categories. See our guides to writing a book description and choosing KDP categories. Kindle Unlimited won't rescue a book that readers abandon on page three.

How HMD can help#

If you'd like someone else to handle the setup, our publishing and distribution packages cover both routes. Amazon Launcher, £297 ($377), sets up your book on KDP with ISBN assignment, metadata and categories. Global Publisher, £897 ($1,097), adds IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, Apple Books, Kobo and Barnes & Noble if you decide to go wide.

If you're enrolled and want ads working alongside Kindle Unlimited, HMD Book Growth runs Amazon ads for books from £297 a month ($377), starting with a free Ads Readiness Check that tells you whether your book is ready for ads at all. There are no sales guarantees, and you pay your ad spend directly to Amazon.

Yes. KDP Select costs nothing to join. The cost is exclusivity: while enrolled, your Kindle ebook can only be distributed digitally through Amazon KDP.
KDP Select is the programme authors enrol in. Kindle Unlimited is the reading subscription that readers pay for. Enrolling your ebook in KDP Select automatically puts it into Kindle Unlimited.
Yes. Exclusivity applies only to the digital ebook. You can sell your paperback, hardback and audiobook through other retailers, including IngramSpark for bookshops.
There is no fixed rate. Amazon shares a monthly KDP Select Global Fund among enrolled authors according to pages read for the first time. The fund and the effective rate change each month, and your KDP reports show your actual earnings.
Yes. You can cancel within three days of a term starting, or switch off renewal so your enrolment ends at the end of the current 90-day term. After that you can publish the ebook on other stores.
No. Each 90-day term allows either a Free Book Promotion of up to five days or one Kindle Countdown Deal of up to seven days. Countdown Deals run only on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.
Sometimes, but less often than for series fiction. Non-fiction readers are more likely to buy across several stores and less likely to binge a series in Kindle Unlimited, so going wide often suits non-fiction better. Check whether bestsellers in your category are in Kindle Unlimited before deciding.

Want your book set up right, on Kindle only or everywhere?

We set up your book on Amazon KDP with ISBN assignment, metadata and categories, or publish it wide across IngramSpark, Apple Books, Kobo and more if exclusivity isn't for you.
