Most self-publishing guides are written for Americans. This one's for you: Nielsen, not Bowker; pounds, not dollars; and the British Library wants a copy. Below is a practical UK path from finished manuscript to on sale, with an honest note on what you can do free and what is worth paying for.
Key takeaways#
- You can upload to Amazon KDP for free, but "free" still costs you time, and often quality and control, if you skip editing, a proper interior and a cover that fits your genre.
- UK authors get ISBNs from Nielsen (or a reseller), not Bowker. Each format needs its own ISBN; Amazon's ASIN is not an ISBN.
- For UK bookshops, plan IngramSpark (or similar trade distribution) as well as KDP, and price in pounds with a clear royalty check.
- After publication, send a print copy to the British Library for legal deposit and register for Public Lending Right (PLR) if you qualify.
- Done-for-you help exists when you want one managed path. A free 15-minute call is enough to sort which steps you can DIY.
Can you self-publish in the UK for free?#
Yes, in the narrow sense. Amazon KDP does not charge you to upload an ebook or paperback. You can use KDP's free ISBN for a paperback that stays on Amazon, design a cover yourself, and format in Word.
What "free" usually costs you:
- Time. Interior files, cover maths, tax interviews and metadata take longer than most first-time authors expect.
- Quality. Readers judge your book against traditionally published titles in the same category. A rushed cover or unedited manuscript shows.
- Control. A free KDP ISBN cannot travel with you to IngramSpark or other stores. Skipping your own ISBN can lock a format to Amazon.
Free tools help you plan before you spend. Start with the self-publishing cost calculator (UK) and the royalty calculator (UK) so you know the numbers, not just the slogans.
Step 1: Finish and edit the manuscript#
Do not format or design a cover while the story or argument is still moving. Get the manuscript stable first.
Typical edit order (each pass has a job):
- 1Developmental or structural feedback (plot, pacing, argument)
- 2Line editing (voice and sentence flow), if you need it
- 3Copy editing (correctness and consistency)
- 4Proofreading (final check, ideally on the formatted pages)
If you are not sure which pass you need, run a chapter through the free Manuscript Readiness Checker, or read proofreading vs copy editing and how much book editing costs in the UK. Beta readers help earlier; they are not a substitute for a professional copy edit on a first book. See how to find beta readers.
Step 2: Choose your formats#
Decide what you will release on day one. Most UK self-publishers start with:
- Ebook (Kindle and, if you go wide, Apple Books, Kobo and others)
- Paperback (KDP print, and often IngramSpark for bookshops)
Hardback and audiobook can wait until the paperback is clean, unless your genre expects them. For hardback on Amazon, see how to publish a hardcover on Amazon KDP. For audio platforms, ACX vs Findaway Voices is a useful comparison.
Each format needs its own ISBN if you want that format in the trade supply chain. Kindle can use an ASIN only; print cannot rely on an ASIN as an ISBN.
Step 3: Get your ISBNs the UK way#
In the UK, the national ISBN agency is Nielsen. You have three common routes:
ISBN options for UK authors
Nielsen (direct) | RecommendedReseller (e.g. HMD) | KDP free ISBN | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is publisher of record | You (your imprint) | Reseller (administrative listing) | Independently published (Amazon) |
| Use outside Amazon | Yes | Yes, on platforms that accept ISBN-13 | No |
| Speed | Agency process; plan ahead | Usually emailed within minutes | Instant in KDP |
| Best for | Authors building their own imprint or small press | Authors who want a portable ISBN today without running an imprint | A first Amazon-only paperback test |
Honest disclosure if you buy through HMD: HMD Publishing Ltd is listed as publisher of record for administrative purposes only. You keep copyright, creative control and 100% of royalties. If you want your own imprint on the record, buy direct from Nielsen instead. For the basics, see ISBNs explained and do I need an ISBN for Kindle. A dedicated Nielsen vs reseller vs free KDP comparison is next in this series.
Step 4: Pick a trim size and format the interior#
Choose a trim size that fits your genre, then format the interior for print PDF and reflowable EPUB. Common KDP sizes include 5 × 8, 5.5 × 8.5 and 6 × 9 inches; UK readers also see A5 and B-format in bookshops. Start with how to choose a book trim size and lock KDP margins and gutter to your final page count before you design the cover spine.
If you will also upload to IngramSpark, build to the stricter interior rules once so one print file works on both platforms. Word can do a simple novel; complex non-fiction and illustrated books fight Word hard. Our book formatting service includes a free formatted first chapter so you can compare before you pay.
Step 5: Get a cover that fits your genre#
Your cover has one job at thumbnail size: signal the genre and look finished next to the bestsellers in your category. Use the free cover size calculator (UK) for spine width, bleed and safe zones once the page count is stable. For design principles, see the book cover design guide.
You can DIY in a design tool, hire a designer, or use a full-wrap package. Just do not finalise the spine until the interior page count is locked.
Step 6: Copyright page and legal bits#
In the UK, copyright in your original work arises automatically when you create it. You do not register copyright the way US authors often do with the Copyright Office. Still put a clear copyright page in the book: year, your name, rights statement, edition, ISBNs and credits.
Use the free copyright page generator (UK) or follow book copyright page and how to copyright a book. This is not legal advice; if your book uses substantial third-party material, get proper clearance.
Step 7: Set up KDP (and IngramSpark UK for bookshops)#
Amazon KDP is where most UK self-publishers sell ebooks and print-on-demand paperbacks. Create the title, enter metadata, upload interior and cover, set territories and pricing, then use Print Previewer before you publish. For a platform walkthrough, see Amazon KDP publishing.
UK-specific admin inside KDP:
- Complete the tax interview (UK authors commonly use a W-8BEN treaty claim). This is not tax advice; check current HMRC and Amazon guidance for your situation.
- Add UK bank details so royalties can be paid.
- Pick categories and keywords with readers in mind; the free keyword research and category finder tools help.
IngramSpark (and similar trade distributors) matter if you want UK bookshops and libraries to be able to order your paperback through normal wholesale channels. Amazon alone is a weak path into high-street shops. Read how to get your self-published book into bookshops and Amazon KDP vs IngramSpark royalties before you choose expanded distribution options that can clash.
Step 8: Price in pounds#
Price for Amazon.co.uk in GBP first if UK readers are your home market, then set other marketplaces deliberately rather than by accident. Check print cost against list price so you are not losing money on every paperback.

For ebook pricing strategy, see best price for Kindle ebook.
Step 9: Legal deposit and PLR#
Two UK duties and rights that US guides usually skip:
Legal deposit. If you publish a print book in the UK, you must deposit one copy with the British Library within one month of publication under the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003. Send it to the Legal Deposit Office, The British Library, Boston Spa, Wetherby, West Yorkshire, LS23 7BY. The other five legal deposit libraries (Scotland, Wales, Oxford, Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin) may request a copy via the Agency for Legal Deposit Libraries. Ebook-only publications have separate electronic deposit arrangements; check bl.uk legal deposit for current process notes (services have been disrupted at times after the 2023 cyber-attack, but print deposit should continue).
Public Lending Right (PLR). If you are named on the title page (or entitled to royalties), your book has a valid ISBN, and your principal home is in the UK or EEA, you can register free with the British Library's PLR scheme to be paid when UK public libraries lend your book. ASINs do not qualify. Register each edition/ISBN after publication; applications for a scheme year are due by 30 June. Start at bl.uk/services/plr.
Step 10: Launch#
A launch does not need a huge budget. It does need a checklist:
- Detail page ready (description, categories, keywords, look-inside)
- Cover that reads at thumbnail size
- Early readers lined up for honest reviews (never pay for reviews)
- A simple launch week plan for email and social if you have an audience
Use the book launch checklist and, if you want help drafting the Amazon description, the free description generator (UK).
What it costs in the UK: three budgets#
Budgets vary by genre and how much you DIY. As a planning frame:
Three UK self-publishing budgets (planning frame)
DIY | RecommendedMid | Done-for-you | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical spend | Mostly free platforms; optional paid tools | Professional edit + cover + formatting, plus ISBNs | One managed package covering edit, design, files and setup |
| You handle | Editing passes, Word formatting, DIY cover, KDP upload | Uploads, metadata, launch basics | Approvals and marketing decisions |
| Trade-off | Lowest cash outlay; highest time and learning curve | Balanced quality without running a full imprint | Highest cash outlay; least juggling |
| When it fits | Short test projects or authors who enjoy production | Most first serious books | Authors who want one project manager |
Run your own numbers in the publishing cost calculator (UK). For a transparent done-for-you option, HMD's Complete Publishing Package starts at Author Essentials for £997 (VAT-inclusive package pricing as listed on the site; no dollar price is published for these tiers). You keep 100% of rights and royalties. A fuller UK cost breakdown is planned as a refresh of our older costs post.
