Can AI Write Your Book? AI vs a Ghostwriter, Honestly
Can AI write a book worth publishing? Where we use AI on a ghostwritten book, where we deliberately do not, and what Amazon KDP asks you to declare. Ghostwriting from £797.
Anyone can generate a book-shaped document in an afternoon. That is not in dispute, and any ghostwriter who tells you otherwise is selling you something. The useful question is narrower: which parts of making a book does a machine genuinely do well, which parts still need a person, and how would you tell the difference from the outside? This page answers all three for how we work — including the parts where we do use AI.
1What AI Is Genuinely Good At
Research and structure. Given a subject, a reader and a goal, a model can gather background, surface the questions a book on that topic has to answer, and propose a chapter architecture far faster than a person reading around the subject for a fortnight. That speed is real, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. It is also most of where the traditional cost of a ghostwritten book went.
💡 Pro Tips
- Background research, source gathering and fact-finding across a subject
- A first chapter architecture: what the book covers, and in what order
- Surfacing gaps — the questions a reader will ask that the outline does not yet answer
- Reformatting and reorganising material you already have
⚠️ Important
- None of that is writing. An outline is a plan for a book, not a book.
2How the Outline Gets Scrutinised Before Anyone Writes
This is the step that decides whether the finished manuscript is any good, and it is the step most people skip. An AI-assisted outline arrives confident and plausible, which is exactly what makes it dangerous: it reads as finished when it is not. So it goes to an editor before a single word of prose is written, and it does not leave that desk until it survives a specific set of questions.
Does this match the author, or a generic book on this subject?
A generated outline defaults to the average book about a topic. Yours has to reflect your actual argument, your evidence and the things only you know. Anything that could have been written about anyone gets cut.
Is the argument in the right order?
Models are good at grouping related material and poor at sequencing an argument so each chapter earns the next. The editor re-orders for the reader's journey, not for tidy categories.
What is missing, and what is padding?
Chapters that exist because the structure looked unbalanced come out. Gaps a reader would notice go in. This is usually where the outline shrinks.
Can every claim actually be supported?
Anything asserted in the outline has to be traceable to your material, real research, or a source we can name. Nothing survives on the strength of sounding right.
You approve it
The outline goes to you before drafting begins. This is the cheapest moment in the whole project to change your mind about what the book is, and the point of showing it to you.
Want to see the structure step yourself?
The free Book Outline Generator does the first pass of this in public — the same starting point, without the editorial scrutiny that follows. It is a useful way to see what a generated outline looks like before a person has been near it.
3Why a Person Writes Every Word of the Prose
Generated prose has a texture. It is fluent, evenly paced, slightly too balanced, and it commits to nothing. Readers rarely name it — they just stop reading. The specific failure is that it cannot sound like you, because sounding like a particular person means making choices a model has no reason to make: the odd sentence that runs too long, the joke that undercuts the serious point, the thing you always say. Our writers have twenty years of experience between the genres we take on, and they write your prose from your material.
💡 Pro Tips
- Voice comes from your examples, your source material and your feedback on early chapters
- You review staged drafts, so voice is corrected while the book is still being built
- Chapter one is treated as the voice test — get that right and the rest follows
⚠️ Important
- If the writing does not sound like you, say so specifically. "This paragraph, not this word" is far more useful than "it doesn't feel like me".
4What Amazon Asks You to Declare
Amazon KDP distinguishes AI-GENERATED content — where a tool produced the text, even if you edited it afterwards — from AI-ASSISTED content, where you created the work and used tools to refine it. Generated content must be declared when you publish. Assisted content does not have to be. The declaration is internal to Amazon: it is not shown on your product page, and Amazon states it does not affect royalties or ranking. Undisclosed AI-generated content, however, breaches KDP's terms and can result in a blocked book or a suspended account.
💡 Pro Tips
- On our projects, research and the first outline are AI-assisted; the manuscript text is written by a person
- Read KDP's current content guidelines before you publish — they are the authority, not us
- Keep your own record of how your book was made; it is your account and your declaration
⚠️ Important
- What you declare to Amazon is your decision as the publisher of record. We are telling you how the book is made so that you can make it accurately — this is not legal advice, and KDP's policy can change.
5What the Method Actually Buys You
Traditional ghostwriting spends its first weeks on reading — a writer absorbing a subject before a sentence exists. We have built that stage into a method instead: structured research, a generated first architecture, then an editor who takes it apart against your material before anyone writes. A reader never experiences that stage; they experience the prose, which is written by a person either way. What the method buys is depth at the planning stage that one writer working alone could not reach in the time, and a schedule measured in weeks rather than seasons. Packages start at £797.
Compare the three manuscript scopes
The Authority Book — £797, Up to 15k words, 4 weeks planned turnaround; The Full Story — £1,997, Up to 40k words, 8 weeks planned turnaround; The Complete Novel — £3,297, Up to 70k words, 12 weeks planned turnaround
6How to Judge Any of This for Yourself
Everything above is a claim, and you have no reason to take a claim on trust from a website. So the offer is deliberately falsifiable: tell us about your book, and if it is a fit, a ghostwriter writes roughly 1,000 words of your actual opening chapter and sends it to you. Read it. If it sounds generated, you will know immediately, and you owe us nothing. That is a harder test than any portfolio, which is why we prefer it.
💡 Pro Tips
- A ghostwriter reads every application and replies within one business day
- No card details are taken at any stage of the free chapter
- If it does not sound like you, that is the end of it and nothing is owed
Common Questions
Do you use AI to write the book?
No. AI is used for research and the first outline, which is then scrutinised by an editor before drafting starts. The prose is written by a human ghostwriter. We are specific about this because a blanket 'we never touch AI' claim is not true of anyone in this industry in 2026.
Will I have to declare AI use to Amazon?
KDP requires you to declare AI-GENERATED text — text a tool produced, even if edited afterwards. It does not require you to declare AI-ASSISTED work. On our projects the manuscript text is written by a person. What you declare is your decision as the publisher of record, and KDP's current content guidelines are the authority on it.
How do you work faster than a traditional ghostwriter?
Because the research and structural-planning stage is done with tools built for it and then scrutinised by an editor — not because anything is skipped. The writing stage is unchanged: a ghostwriter writes every word of your prose from your material, at the pace good prose takes.
Can I tell the difference between AI prose and human prose?
Usually, though most readers feel it rather than diagnose it — generated prose is fluent, evenly paced and non-committal. Rather than argue about it, apply for a free chapter of your own book and judge the actual writing.
What happens at the outline stage?
The outline is checked against five questions: is it specific to you rather than generic, is the argument in the right order, what is missing or padding, can every claim be supported, and do you approve it. Drafting does not begin until it has passed all five, including yours.
We use AI where it saves you money and a person where it decides whether the book is any good. If that sounds like a convenient story, the free chapter is there to test it — packages start at £797 with planned 4-12 weeks turnaround.
What's your next move?
If ghostwriting is the right fit and your premise, reader and target length are taking shape, compare the current manuscript scopes and send the text-only brief. If the structure or working relationship is still unclear, talk it through first.
Or contact support if you have questions before ordering.
