About This Role
As a Book Editor at HMD Publishing, you'll be the guardian of quality, helping authors transform their manuscripts into polished, professional books that readers love.
Whether it's developmental editing to strengthen narrative structure, copyediting to ensure clarity and consistency, or proofreading to catch those final details, your expertise will be invaluable to authors at every stage of their journey.
You'll work with a diverse range of genres - from gripping thrillers and heartwarming romances to insightful business books and powerful memoirs. Each project is an opportunity to help an author achieve their publishing dreams.
What You'll Do
- Perform developmental editing to improve structure, pacing, and narrative flow
- Conduct thorough copyediting for grammar, punctuation, and style consistency
- Proofread manuscripts to catch any remaining errors before publication
- Provide constructive, encouraging feedback to authors
- Ensure manuscripts adhere to style guides (Chicago, AP, or client-specific)
- Track changes and provide clear explanations for edits
- Meet agreed deadlines while maintaining high quality standards
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience with book editing (developmental, copyediting, or proofreading)
- Excellent command of English grammar and writing conventions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word with Track Changes
- Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
- Strong attention to detail and consistency
- Ability to adapt tone and feedback style to different authors
- Professional communication skills
Nice to Have
- Experience editing in multiple genres
- Background in creative writing or journalism
- Certification from a professional editing organization
- Experience with style sheets and brand guidelines
