Most of our marketing now lives or dies in the first three seconds of a vertical video. We need an editor who understands that, and who can cut for retention rather than for a showreel.
HMD Publishing is a UK self-publishing agency — over 10,000 books brought to market for authors in 47 countries. Our video output is a steady weekly rhythm rather than occasional set pieces: founder talking-head shorts for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube; longer YouTube tutorials for authors; cinematic book trailers for client launches; and cut-downs of all of the above.
You will get raw footage and a script, and you will own everything after that — pacing, cuts, captions, sound design, motion graphics, thumbnails. Nobody will frame-check you. We will judge the work by whether people watch it to the end.
The volume is real, so speed matters as much as polish. A tidy project structure and a template system you actually maintain will make your life much easier here than a bespoke build every time.
This role is fully remote and open worldwide, with a few hours of overlap with the marketing team.
To apply, send your CV and a reel or a link to recent work. We are most interested in short-form vertical video with real view counts attached — tell us which ones performed and, if you know, why.
What you'll do
- Cut short-form vertical video for Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts — the bulk of the weekly output
- Edit long-form YouTube tutorials, including screen-share sequences, chapters and thumbnails
- Produce book trailers for client launches, from footage and stills through to final grade
- Build and maintain caption, lower-third and motion-graphic templates so the output stays consistent and fast

- Handle sound: levels, music beds, and cleaning up audio recorded in imperfect rooms
- Keep the asset library and project files organised so any edit can be picked up again months later
- Work from a script and shot list, and flag when the footage does not support the script
What we're looking for
- Strong Adobe Premiere Pro skills, plus After Effects for motion graphics
- A reel or portfolio of short-form vertical video — this is the main thing we will look at
- A real feel for pacing and retention: you can explain why a cut lands where it does
- Comfort with captions and text-on-screen as a core part of the edit, not an afterthought

- Ability to hold quality at volume — several edits a week, not one a month
- Reliable communication and honest timelines
Nice to have
None of these are required. They are the things that would make you stand out.
- Colour grading beyond the basics
- DaVinci Resolve, Figma or Photoshop for thumbnails and stills
- Experience editing for a brand or agency rather than one-off client work
- Some understanding of publishing, books or the author market

- AI-assisted editing tools where they genuinely save time
