Methodology

How these numbers were produced — so you can decide what to trust.

  • Source: HMD Publishing's production Postgres database (Supabase). Specifically the client_books, clients, and client_services tables.
  • Cut date: 21 April 2026. Numbers are recomputed each time the report is regenerated.
  • Genres:Title-cased and de-duplicated. We exclude internal placeholder labels (sequence tags like “Book 2”, “Specialised Category”, “Promotion”) that are data-entry artefacts, not reader-facing genres.
  • Service mix: Cancelled service rows are excluded. Each author is counted once per service, even if they purchased multiple instances.
  • Publishing timeline: Median computed across rows of client_services with service_type = ‘Book Publishing’ and both start + delivery dates populated. Outliers above 365 days are clipped.
  • What’s missing:We deliberately don’t publish bestseller-rate or geographic-share figures because the underlying fields aren’t reliably populated yet. We’d rather show fewer numbers we can defend than more we can’t.
